Calculating Alcohol Solutions: an integrative intervention for secondary schools
In this educational intervention, we show an example of scientific literacy. The project aimed to integrate contents in Physics and Chemistry (solutions) with contents in Biology about health and wellbeing. In particular, we tackled alcohol consumption. Therefore, in this project, we adapted the curriculum in Physics, Chemistry and Biology to teach about harm reduction as well as the content in these subjects.
Most teenagers in the intervention highlighted that they lacked accurate and contrasted scientific information to understand the risks from alcohol consumption. Our results show that our integrative educational intervention increased risk perception in Year 11 students. This change was stimulated by a conceptual and procedural understanding of this substance.
